I listened to Paul Collins talk today on "How to be Obscure". It's an entertaining talk on people who were almost famous, or should have been famous, but are now unremebered. Stories told included N-Rays, studies of the effects of opium and how an inventor managed to automate a process and then make a fortune from it by not patenting it and keeping the process a secret.Collins edits the Collins' library and is the author of Banvard's Folly: Thirteen People Who Didn't Change the World.

This last weekend was the company picnic. The food was okay. The activities fun. The large group of friends to enjoy it with was great. The mountain, Beautiful.

In related events, last thursday was the  windows .net server rc1 ship party. I got there pretty late at which point it was dangerous to be outside. Water ballons were constantly being flung into the air at any constentration of bodies. Beer was tossed at any daring to come outside the caffiteria door.

I noticed that neowin has a story with a screenshot of sideshow. (This is not the longhorn one). I do suggest that people check it out, but check out this research paper instead of thier silly screenshot. The research paper has a number of screenshots. Sideshow has been one of my distractions at microsoft over the last year. I've written a ticket that tells me what's being served at my cafiterria; one that hooks into my test machine automation informing me of when automated tasks are completed and the overall status of my machines; and even one that (with some hacking around in radio userland) tells me how many news items are waiting in the aggergator with a popup of the top ten. Double click the ticket and I get the web page or application to do more in. And there is still more that I have an itching to create.
